ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis and Continuation Care for Children Aged 8+ and Adults

Finding a ADHD GP can make it easier to access coordinated assessment, diagnosis, treatment and ongoing care.

Medprime provides structured ADHD assessment and management for children aged 8 years and over, adolescents and adults. We also offer ADHD continuation appointments for eligible patients who have already been diagnosed and are stable on treatment.

Our ADHD services are provided by Dr Zohra Alimie and are designed to support patients through each stage of their ADHD care.

ADHD Assessment With a GP

ADHD can affect concentration, organisation, time management, impulse control, activity levels and emotional regulation.

Children may experience difficulties with:

  • Learning and completing schoolwork

  • Following instructions

  • Organisation and forgetfulness

  • Restlessness or impulsive behaviour

  • Friendships and emotional regulation

Adults may experience:

  • Poor concentration and distractibility

  • Difficulty starting or completing tasks

  • Chronic disorganisation

  • Poor time management

  • Forgetfulness and missed appointments

  • Restlessness or impulsive decisions

  • Difficulties at work, university or in relationships

There is no single questionnaire, blood test or scan that can diagnose ADHD. A comprehensive ADHD assessment should consider symptoms, developmental history, functioning and other conditions that could cause or contribute to similar difficulties.

Medprime ADHD Assessment Process

1. Initial ADHD Medical Review

The first step is to book an Initial ADHD Medical Review with Dr Zohra Alimie.

During this appointment, Dr Alimie will review:

  • Your current concerns and symptoms

  • Medical and mental health history

  • Current medications

  • Developmental, educational or occupational history

  • Whether a formal ADHD assessment is suitable

You will then be advised whether you may proceed to an ADHD assessment.

2. ADHD Assessment

Once approved, you can book a one-hour ADHD Assessment appointment.

Before the appointment, our nurse will send the required questionnaires and request relevant supporting information. This may include:

  • Previous medical or psychological reports

  • School reports

  • Parent and teacher questionnaires

  • Information from a family member or partner

  • A written summary of your ADHD-related concerns

For children, information from parents and teachers is particularly important because symptoms need to be considered across settings such as home and school.

The assessment explores current symptoms, childhood history, functional impairment and other possible explanations for the person’s difficulties.

3. ADHD Management Appointment

After the assessment, a separate ADHD Management Appointment is required.

During this appointment, Dr Alimie will discuss:

  • The assessment outcome

  • Whether the diagnostic criteria for ADHD are met

  • Treatment and support options

  • Medication, where clinically appropriate

  • Your ongoing ADHD management plan

ADHD medication, including stimulant medication, is considered during the management appointment rather than the assessment appointment.

A diagnosis of ADHD does not automatically mean medication will be prescribed. Treatment decisions depend on the person’s clinical needs, medical history, potential risks and suitability for medication.

ADHD Continuation Prescribing and Ongoing GP Care

Patients who already have an established ADHD diagnosis may be looking for an ADHD continuation GP to assist with ongoing medication monitoring and prescriptions.

Medprime accepts eligible continuation-care patients from 8 years of age.

An ADHD continuation appointment may include:

  • Reviewing your original ADHD diagnosis

  • Reviewing specialist letters and previous reports

  • Confirming your current medication and dosage

  • Checking treatment response and side effects

  • Reviewing blood pressure, pulse, weight and other relevant observations

Patients seeking continuation care should provide their diagnostic report, specialist correspondence, medication history and other requested records before the appointment.

 Book an ADHD GP Appointment

The appropriate first appointment will depend on whether you are seeking a new ADHD assessment or continuation of previously established treatment.

This information is general and does not replace individual medical advice. ADHD medication and stimulant prescribing are subject to clinical assessment, prescribing requirements and applicable NSW legislation. An assessment or previous diagnosis does not guarantee that medication or a prescription will be provided.

ADHD GP Continuation Prescribing

At our practice, we recognise that managing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t just a one-off step—it requires ongoing, coordinated, and holistic care. That’s why we offer a dedicated GP continuation prescribing service.

ADHD GP Continuation Prescribing Sydney

What is ‘continuation prescribing’?

Once a specialist (such as a psychiatrist or paediatrician) has formally diagnosed ADHD and initiated your medication, a GP can take over the role of prescribing that medication on an ongoing basis. This means:

  • You stay under the care of your GP for ongoing prescriptions and monitoring.

  • Your treatment remains local and accessible, with continuity of care that covers both your ADHD and your overall health.

  • Your GP can increase or decrease the dose of your medication as needed.

Why choose GP continuing prescribing?

  • Convenience & accessibility: You can see your GP locally rather than always needing to return to your specialist for every prescription.

  • Holistic oversight: Your GP can monitor not just your ADHD medication but also your broader physical health—sleep, mood, lifestyle, cardiovascular checks, etc.

  • Stability & continuity: Once your treatment is stabilised, you can maintain it without disruption, with planned reviews to catch any changes or issues early.

How our ADHD continuation service works

  1. Eligibility
    You’re eligible if you:

    • Have a formal ADHD diagnosis made by a psychiatrist or paediatrician.

    • Have had your ADHD medication started and stabilised by the specialist.

    • Are aged 6 years or older

  2. Initial Review
At the start of GP continuation care, we schedule a comprehensive review. In this review we:

    • Check your ADHD symptoms (focus, attention, hyperactivity) and how you’re functioning in daily life.

    • Review your current medication: type, dose, response, any side-effects.

    • Conduct physical checks: blood pressure, heart rate, weight (with ECG if there’s relevant cardiac history).

    • Discuss sleep, mood, lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, stress).

    • Confirm specialist correspondence and update the shared-care plan or continuation authority as required.

  3. 3-Monthly Reviews

    • Monitoring of medication effect and any side-effects.

    • Blood pressure, heart rate, weight.

    • Discussion of any changes in work, study, home life, stress, sleep.

    • Prescription renewal as appropriate, safe storage of Schedule 8 (if stimulants) medication, and communication with specialist if needed.

  4. Ongoing Shared-Care & Support

    • We maintain open communication with your specialist to ensure your care remains coordinated.

    • We provide holistic support: beyond medication we address lifestyle, sleep, mood, behavioural strategies, wellbeing.

    • We monitor for any changes in your situation as your life evolves (job change, study load, new health issues) that might affect your ADHD care.

What to bring to your review

  • Your specialist’s diagnosis report and treatment plan (if available).

  • Current medication list and doses.

  • Your most recent specialist review letter (if you have one).

  • Any relevant test results (blood pressure readings, ECGs, etc).

  • Any personal notes about how treatment is going: sleep changes, mood changes, attention problems, lifestyle changes.

Why our practice stands out

We offer more than just routine care. Our approach is about your whole life—work or study demands, family, sleep, stress, mood, lifestyle. We recognise that ADHD affects many areas of life, and we support not only medication but the broader strategies you need to thrive.
