ADHD GP Continuation Prescribing

At our practice, we recognise that managing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) isn’t just a one-off step—it requires ongoing, coordinated, and holistic care. That’s why we offer a dedicated GP continuation prescribing service.

ADHD GP Continuation Prescribing Sydney

What is ‘continuation prescribing’?

Once a specialist (such as a psychiatrist or paediatrician) has formally diagnosed ADHD and initiated your medication, a GP can take over the role of prescribing that medication on an ongoing basis. This means:

  • You stay under the care of your GP for ongoing prescriptions and monitoring.

  • Your treatment remains local and accessible, with continuity of care that covers both your ADHD and your overall health.

  • Your GP can increase or decrease the dose of your medication as needed.

Why choose GP continuing prescribing?

  • Convenience & accessibility: You can see your GP locally rather than always needing to return to your specialist for every prescription.

  • Holistic oversight: Your GP can monitor not just your ADHD medication but also your broader physical health—sleep, mood, lifestyle, cardiovascular checks, etc.

  • Stability & continuity: Once your treatment is stabilised, you can maintain it without disruption, with planned reviews to catch any changes or issues early.

How our ADHD continuation service works

  1. Eligibility
    You’re eligible if you:

    • Have a formal ADHD diagnosis made by a psychiatrist or paediatrician.

    • Have had your ADHD medication started and stabilised by the specialist.

    • Are aged 6 years or older

  2. Initial Review
At the start of GP continuation care, we schedule a comprehensive review. In this review we:

    • Check your ADHD symptoms (focus, attention, hyperactivity) and how you’re functioning in daily life.

    • Review your current medication: type, dose, response, any side-effects.

    • Conduct physical checks: blood pressure, heart rate, weight (with ECG if there’s relevant cardiac history).

    • Discuss sleep, mood, lifestyle factors (diet, exercise, stress).

    • Confirm specialist correspondence and update the shared-care plan or continuation authority as required.

  3. 3-Monthly Reviews

    • Monitoring of medication effect and any side-effects.

    • Blood pressure, heart rate, weight.

    • Discussion of any changes in work, study, home life, stress, sleep.

    • Prescription renewal as appropriate, safe storage of Schedule 8 (if stimulants) medication, and communication with specialist if needed.

  4. Ongoing Shared-Care & Support

    • We maintain open communication with your specialist to ensure your care remains coordinated.

    • We provide holistic support: beyond medication we address lifestyle, sleep, mood, behavioural strategies, wellbeing.

    • We monitor for any changes in your situation as your life evolves (job change, study load, new health issues) that might affect your ADHD care.
